While D-Day (Operation Overlord) was effectively an amphibious assault, there were numerous phases to the operation. Beginning with the airborne drop of 13,000 paratroopers, the plan then moved into an attempt to deceive the German defenders with a bombardment around Calais. At 3 A.M the aerial attack on German defences in Normandy commenced, followed up by a naval bombardment. The amphibious assault took place between 6-8am. You can see more about how D-Day unfolded on each beach at D-Day hour by hour on the D-Day Museum’s website.
