The Battle of Britain: The Fight For Europe’s Skies

The Battle of Britain had a great impact on the outcome of the war. The Luftwaffe’s failure to gain air superiority over the RAF ultimately scuppered their plans to invade Britain. The battle lasted just under four months and was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces.

This video examines the different planes used in the Battle of Britain and throughout the rest of the war. The focus switches from the British forces defending to the Allied forces attacking mainland Europe. As the war evolved, so did the technology available. Radar was introduced to individual aircraft and specialist techniques were developed and utilised, namely by the RAF 617 Squadron, who were better known as the Dambusters.
